Civic body launches ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’ campaign

With an aim to increase the city’s green cover, Ludhiana Municipal Corporation (MC) has launched a campaign, ‘Ek Ped Maa ke Naam’. Forty self-help groups (SHGs) have been roped in under the initiative that was launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, in the past.

In the first phase—’Women for Trees’—MC officials, working under the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) scheme and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme, along with women members of the SHGs, identified around half a dozen sites in the city for planting trees.

The plantation drives will be taken up in the second phase of the campaign, which will commence on June 5. Executive Engineer Jatinder Pal Singh, LSO Rajinder Singh and SDO Gurneelam Kumar, JE Kirpal, urban planner Birinder Kaur, CMMs Jaspreet Kaur, Rajinder Kaur and Deepak Shahi, among others are part of this initiative. The officials stated that the campaign had been launched on the directions MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal, Joint Commissioner Ankur Mahindroo and Joint Commissioner Vineet Kumar.

The members of the SHGs have been provided kits for the plantation and training has also been provided for planting the saplings properly, said officials. The SHG members would also be given the responsibility of the maintenance of the saplings that are planted under the campaign and financial incentives would be provided for the same, they said.

MC Commissioner Dachalwal urged residents to take part in the initiative and work to spread greenery in their surroundings. He urged the residents to support the authorities concerned in keeping the city clean and green.
