CBDT Extends ITR Filing Deadline, New Last Date Is September 15, 2025

New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has announced an extension for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) for the financial year 2024-25 (assessment year 2025-26). The earlier deadline of July 31, 2025, has now been pushed to September 15, 2025. This gives taxpayers 46 more days to file their returns.

This decision was made because the Income Tax Department has not yet released the final ITR forms or the online utilities required to file the returns. The forms were delayed, and without them, people cannot start preparing their tax returns properly.

The extension applies mainly to taxpayers who do not need their accounts audited. This includes most salaried employees. So, if you are a salaried person, this gives you more time to gather your documents and file your return without any last-minute rush.

The Income Tax Department announced this news through a post on X (formerly Twitter). The post said, “Kind attention Taxpayers! CBDT has decided to extend the due date of filing of ITRs, which are due for filing by 31st July 2025, to 15th September 2025.” It added that the extension is to help with changes in ITR forms, updates in the filing system, and time for TDS credits to show up. A formal notification will be issued soon.

This extra time is expected to make filing smoother and more accurate for everyone. With new ITR forms and system changes coming, both taxpayers and the Income Tax Department will benefit from this extended deadline.

Tax experts also say this is a helpful move because it gives people time to understand the new forms and make sure their tax returns are correct. Mistakes in filing can lead to notices or penalties, so extra time is always helpful.

Taxpayers are advised to use this time wisely and not wait till the last minute. Once the ITR forms and utilities are released, they should start the process early.
