SC collegium recommends Justice Chauhan as CJ of Jharkhand High Court

The Supreme Court Collegium on Monday (May 26, 2025) recommended the name of Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, the senior-most Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan belongs to Ruhru tehsil in Shimla district. He obtained a degree in law from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh in 1989. He practised in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh in all branches of law.

He elevated as Additional Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh on February, 23, 2014, and was thereafter appointed as permanent judge of the High Court on November 30, 2014.

Justice Chauhan is also the Executive Chairman of HP State Legal Service Authority and in Board of the Governing Council the Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla. He also remained President of the HP Judicial Academy.

Being a chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Committee, High Court of Himachal Pradesh, Justice Chauhan has done tremendous work with keen interest for the welfare and interest of the children of Bal/Balika Ashrams, Himachal, Hospital for Mental Health and Rehab, Shimla, and old age homes of Himachal Pradesh.

While heading the Computer and e-Courts Committee of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, Justice Chauhan has initiated the computerization in the High Court as well as Subordinate Courts has scaled new heights as now the Advocates/litigants apart from getting information about their cases can also access various other services i.e. applying online for certified copy, pay court fees online, access cause-list, e-file a case (ITR), apply only for e-Gate Pass etc.

Justice Chauhan remained Acting Chief Justice of High Court of Himachal Pradesh with effect from April, 20, 2023 to May, 29, 2023, and again with effect from October 19, 2024, to December 28, 2024.

Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan has delivered a number of landmark judgments and to date, approximately 72,000 number of cases have been disposed of by him.
