Justice Chauhan’s name recommended as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court
The Supreme Court Collegium yesterday recommended the name of Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, the senior-most Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court.
Justice Chauhan belongs to Rohru tehsil in Shimla district. He had obtained a degree in law from Panjab University, Chandigarh, and enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh in 1989. He practised law in the High Court of Himachal Pradesh.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh on February 23, 2014, and thereafter was appointed a permanent Judge of the High Court on November 30, 2014. Justice Chauhan is the Executive Chairman of the HP State Legal Service Authority and is also on the board of the Governing Council of Himachal Pradesh National Law University, Shimla. He had also remained the president of the HP Judicial Academy.
Being the Chairperson of the Juvenile Justice Committee, High Court of Himachal Pradesh, Justice Chauhan had done tremendous work for the welfare of the children of Bal Ashrams and Balika Ashrams in Himachal, Hospital for Mental Health and Rehab, Shimla, and the old-age homes of Himachal Pradesh.
Justice Chauhan had initiated computerisation in the High Court as well as subordinate courts, enabling advocates/litigants to get information about their cases and access various other services i.e. applying online for a certified copy, pay court fees online, access cause-list, e-file a case (ITR), apply only for e-Gate Pass etc.
Justice Chauhan remained the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Himachal Pradesh from April 20, 2023, to May 29, 2023, and again from October 19, 2024, to December 28, 2024. He had delivered a number of landmark judgments and till date disposed of around 72,000 cases.
