Crackdown on water misuse, teams formed to identify illegal connections

Amid the ongoing shortage of potable water, the district administration has launched a crackdown on water misuse. The Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) and Swachhta Sahayak Sangthan have formed block-level inspection teams, aimed at identifying and disconnecting illegal water connections and monitoring wastage of drinking water.

The teams will conduct regular inspections in both urban and rural areas, with a focus on large water users such as hotels, restaurants and washing stations.

SP Joshi, Superintending Engineer, PHED, said the campaign had been launched to ensure equitable water supply during the summer months and curb water wastage. The inspection teams comprise subdivisional engineers, junior engineers and other staffers.

“In cases where illegal water connections are found, they will be disconnected immediately, or reclassified under commercial categories if required. Consumers who are found to be wasting water—by allowing it to flow openly—will be served notices and may also face disconnection. Any complaints about water leakage in public areas will be addressed promptly. Officials have also urged the residents to pay their outstanding water bills on time,” he added.

The campaign was kicked off in Narnaul city, where a team led by Subdivisional Engineer Mukesh Kumar conducted inspections on Singhana Road. The team members included JE Abhishek, Superviser Sanjay, BRC Indrajit, and fitters Mahipal, Bhoopsingh and Shekhar.

During the inspection, water users at hotels and washing stations were directed to present their water bills. Mukesh Kumar emphasised that the consumers must regularise their water connections, warning that illegal ones would be cut off without delay.

Two teams have been formed in Narnaul block, two in Nizampur and one team each in Nangal Chaudhary, Ateli, Kanina, Mahendragarh and Satnali. These teams will conduct inspections in villages and towns, covering locations such as hotels, restaurants, washing centres, private schools, parks, community halls and residences to ensure water connections are legal and not being misused.

The administration has made it mandatory to install taps on all water outlets to prevent unnecessary water flow. Additionally, the consumers have been advised not to use drinking water for irrigation or gardening purposes. Such violations will invite action.
