UPI International: The Indian Ministry of External Affairs today announced that UPI services are now available in Sri Lanka and Mauritius as well. Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a virtual event to inaugurate UPI and Rupay Card Services in Sri Lanka and Mauritius. Let us tell you that NPCI International Payments Limited and Lyra announced the adoption of UPI payments in France earlier this month. In recent years, many countries have started accepting payments through UPI. Here is a list of countries where Indians can use UPI to make payments.

First know what is UPI?

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a quick real time payment system that allows users to transfer money to more than one bank account, on a real-time basis. It is a very easy process in which there is no need for bank account details. In the last two years, many countries have started accepting payments through UPI app.

In which countries can UPI be used?

UPI International service is definitely making travelling abroad even more convenient, reducing the hassle of carrying cash and cards. With the efforts of the Government of India and NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), UPI is now available in many countries. Here is a list of countries where Indians can make payments using UPI:

Sri Lanka: Indian travellers can now make QR code based payments in Sri Lanka using their UPI apps.

Mauritius: Indians visiting Mauritius will be able to make payments to local businesses using UPI. Similarly, tourists from Mauritius will be able to make payments in India using the IPS (Instant Payment System) app. Using RuPay technology in Mauritius, banks will also be able to issue RuPay cards locally.

France: The famous Eiffel Tower in Paris is now officially accepting UPI. NPCI International Payments Limited has launched this facility in collaboration with French company Lyra.

Bhutan: In partnership with the Royal Monetary Authority of Bhutan, BHIM UPI QR based payments are available in Bhutan from July 13, 2021.

Oman: A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between NPCI International Payments Limited and the Central Bank of Oman on October 4, 2022. This MoU enables Indian RuPay cards to be accepted at all ATMs, POS and e-commerce sites in Oman, as well as facilitate cross-border remittances between India and Oman through UPI.

Nepal: Indian UPI users can transfer money to Nepal through UPI ID via mobile banking. RBI and Nepal Rastra Bank have signed an agreement regarding this. Both the countries have signed an agreement for the integration of India’s UPI and Nepal’s NPI.

Abu Dhabi (UAE): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan launched UPI services in Abu Dhabi.

10 countries in Southeast Asia: NIPL has signed an agreement with Liquid Group that will enable QR-based UPI payments in 10 countries including Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Singapore: Singapore is the first country to launch a cross-border person-to-person (P2P) payment service. India and Singapore launched a connection between UPI and PayNow in February last year. This will help Indian expatriates in Singapore with instant and cheap money transfers.

How does UPI work abroad?

To make UPI payments abroad, you first need to register your bank account with a UPI-enabled mobile app. Once the bank account is linked, users can enter the details of the account to which the money is to be sent, including the bank account number and other details, as well as the amount and currency to be transferred. International payments are similar to domestic UPI payments, but bank charges and foreign currency exchange rates apply.

How to activate UPI International?

How to activate UPI International on PhonePe:

Step 1: Open your UPI app and go to the home screen.

Step 2: Click on your profile picture.

Step 3: Under the ‘Payment Settings’ section, select ‘UPI International’.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Activate’ button next to the bank account you want to use for international UPI payments.

Step 5: Enter your UPI PIN to confirm activation.

How to make international payments using Google Pay:

Step 1: Open the Google Pay app.

Step 2: Tap ‘Scan QR code’.

Step 3: Scan the QR code of the international merchant.

Step 4: Enter the amount in the foreign currency to be paid.

Step 5: Select the bank account you want to use to pay the international merchant.

Step 6: Enter the UPI PIN to confirm your payment.
