Students take out rally against plastic pollution

Students of GDR Day Boarding School in Phagwara led a dynamic awareness rally aimed at combating plastic pollution. The rally was taken out in collaboration with the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara.

The event, held under the broader “Mera Ward Meri Shaan” initiative spearheaded by the Punjab Government, aligns with this year’s global theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Organised under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Dr Akshita Gupta, the rally saw students march through local neighbourhoods, raising awareness about the harmful impact of single-use plastics and promoting sustainable alternatives. Carrying banners and shouting eco-conscious slogans, the students encouraged residents to adopt environment-friendly practices in their daily lives.

An exhibition was also hosted on the school campus, where students presented a range of innovative alternatives to plastic products. Items on display included cloth and jute bags, biodegradable utensils, sustainable packaging and other reusable household items designed to replace plastic plates, straws, cutlery, cups and wrapping materials.

Speaking on the occasion, GDR Chairman Amit Sharma praised the collaboration and thanked the Municipal Corporation for its proactive approach. “The initiative plays a crucial role in nurturing environmental responsibility among students and motivating the community to make eco-conscious decisions,” he said.

School principal Madhuri expressed gratitude to the Municipal Corporation for its logistical support and commended the civic staff and councillors whose involvement enhanced the event’s impact. Special thanks were extended to Chief Sanitary Inspector Ajay Kumar, along with officials Hitesh Sharma, Namdev, Jatinder Vij and Pooja for their efforts.

The event was also supported by municipal councillors Neha Ohri, Preeti Sharma, Sudhir Sood, Jasvir Singh, Ankush Ohri and Adrit Sood.
