Red alert issued in many parts of Punjab
Amid the scorching heat in North India, the Punjab government has announced summer holidays in all schools in the state. According to the official notification, all government, aided, recognized and private schools will remain closed from June 2 to June 30, 2025. The decision has been taken at a time when the temperature in many districts including Bathinda, Patiala and Amritsar has gone above 44 degrees Celsius, raising concerns about the health of school-going children. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for parts of Punjab, warning of heatwave conditions next week as well.
Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains confirmed this on Monday, saying that the safety of students is of paramount importance. He said that in view of the severity of the weather and in consultation with the health department, it has been decided to start summer vacations early in the best interest of children. Apart from the holiday schedule, schools have been advised to ensure that all pending academic work, including distribution of report cards and preliminary sessions for the next academic year, is completed before June 1. Many schools have already reduced study time this month due to rising temperatures.
Advice to stay indoors and stay hydrated
Meanwhile, the state education department has also urged parents to ensure that children stay indoors and stay hydrated during peak hours. Schools are expected to reopen on July 1 depending on the weather conditions. The announcement comes after similar steps taken by neighbouring states like Haryana and Delhi, where authorities have either advanced summer vacations or changed school timings due to the scorching heat.
