Massive layoffs in Wipro as Azim Premji’s company decides to shut down….
Labour unrest and a workers’ strike was going on since December 2024, then after 6 months the company finally decided to shut down its operations in one of its manufacturing units in the factory, according to a media report. The closure may leave hundreds of employees without jobs, although there is no official announcement made by the company on numbers.
Report by sightinplus claimed that employees arriving for their regular shifts were reportedly stopped at the factory gates by security and were informed of the closure. Many workers were in shock as they had claimed that they started working in December and were unaware of the company’s decision.
The media report claimed that the shutdown was due to operational disruptions and financial losses. The negotiations with the workers’ union were going on but two sides didn’t reach a common conclusion.
The union had filed complaints with the state’s CM and Labour Department, and asked them for an intervention to protect workers’ rights. Protests had erupted in the area wherein employees were demanding fair compensation and alternative employment opportunities.
The closure will impact on many workers including those who are on contracts and also on suppliers. Though Wipro factory in Baddi will be operational, the shutdown of this unit will affect many workers.
