MDL lays keel of 1st Coast Guard vessel

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), a Navratna DPSU on Tuesday laid the keel of the first of the 14 fast patrol vessels it is building for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

MDL has signed the contract with ICG to design, build, and deliver a total of fourteen fast patrol vessels. The project is valued at Rs 1,070.47 crore. MDL commenced the production activity for 1st ship of 14 vessels (Y-16501) for the ICG on Dec 19, 2024, according to a release.

DIG Atul Parlikar, TM, OIC-CGSD (Mbi) presided the keel laying ceremony in the presence of A Vinod, executive director (shipbuilding- MDL) along with senior officials from ICG, classification society (ABS & IRS) and MDL held at Ritchie Dry Dock of MDL. The vessel is scheduled for delivery in Mar 2026.

Each vessel will feature a waterjet propulsion drive, built to meet contractual speed in excess of 33 knots and shall be classified under Dual class (ABS & IRS). The vessels will be designed as High speed craft, equipped with a waterjet propulsion, high-speed diesel engine. The vessel shall be used for patrolling coastal waters and protection of fisheries. These vessels will be capable of carrying a small high speed boat to carry out search and rescue missions in shallow unchartered waters.
