India’s biggest IT company, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), is embracing artificial intelligence (AI) with open arms, with parent company Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran saying TCS will not only adopt agentic AI—the next phase of AI after generative AI—but will have AI agents and robots working alongside humans in the future.
“Gen AI is not just another tech cycle – it is a civilisational shift,” Chandrasekaran wrote in a letter to shareholders after the company posted a revenue of over $30 billion this year. He said TCS was uniquely positioned to lead the transition “with our domain expertise, deep client relationships and contextual knowledge.”
The IT services major is planning to establish a large pool of AI agents working alongside its human workforce, with agentic AI being embedded deeply into enterprise systems. The company will look at delivering solutions through the human + AI model, while also investing in AI data centres and cloud infrastructure, and for partnerships across hardware providers, solution innovators and startups.
“The rise of autonomous robots and AI agents promises a future of ‘dark factories’ and AI-assisted enterprise functions,” he said, adding, “software development is being redefined by AI-led modernisation, as legacy code is being transformed rapidly.”
The Tata Group chairman did not address the issue of whether such large-scale adoption of AI would mean any retrenchment of TCS workforce. TCS is believed to have over six lakh people working for it.
In a separate letter, MD & CEO K. Krithivasan said, “Significant innovation is happening in the AI ecosystem across infrastructure, data platforms, models, and AI native business applications. These innovations are forcing companies to invest in technology and rapidly adopt AI to meet evolving customer expectations.”
He explained how TCS was servicing clients under the changed scenario by establishing AI Centres of Excellence, creating AI Labs, building safe, secure and scalable Gen AI as service platforms, providing domain AI solutions for business operations with over 150 AI agents, delivering Gen AI-infused services for software engineering, IT operations, technology modernisation and cyber security, as well as setting up secure Cloud with integrated AI.
