Amit Shah to arrive in Jammu on two-day visit on May 29

Union Home Minister Amit Shah will arrive in Jammu on May 29 for a two-day visit. This is his first trip to the region since Operation Sindoor was conducted by the Indian Air Force in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) to retaliate against the April 22 Pahalgam attack that left 25 tourists and a local dead.

The Home Minister had visited Kashmir the same evening and toured Baisaran the next day. According to reports, Shah is scheduled to review the security situation across Jammu and Kashmir and will visit the border district of Poonch, which bore the brunt of Pakistani shelling, killing 14 people and damaging property.

The Home Minister will chair a high-level meeting in Jammu on the evening of May 29. The meeting will be attended by J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and senior officials from the Army, paramilitary forces, Jammu and Kashmir Police, civil administration, and Intelligence agencies.

The meeting will cover security arrangements for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra from July 3 to August 9.

This year, security for Amarnath yatris will be heightened in light of the Pahalgam attack. The meeting will also discuss infiltration, counter-terror operations, and follow-ups on security measures taken after the last meeting.

The presence of terrorists in the upper reaches of Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri, and Poonch districts will also be discussed.

On May 30, Shah will visit Poonch to assess damage caused by Pakistani shelling. He will be meeting the families of the victims. The Lieutenant Governor has announced government jobs for the next of kin killed in the Pakistan shelling.

According to Sunil Sharma, Leader of Opposition and a senior BJP leader, the Centre has agreed in principle to provide a special package for the rebuilding of more than 1,500 homes damaged due to Pakistani shelling. The package is beyond the financial relief that the state government provides to such families under Disaster Relief Fund. According to Sharma, the Centre has also agreed to build more bomb-resistant bunkers for the border residents in Jammu and Kashmir.
