Two more Rohtak varsity staffers arrested in MBBS exam scam
In a major breakthrough in the ongoing MBBS exam paper leak scam, Rohtak police on Wednesday arrested two more employees of Pt BD Sharma University of Health Sciences (UHSR). The accused, identified as Jitender, a programmer, and Sonu, a clerk, allegedly leaked MBBS question papers on three occasions in May 2024 in exchange for money.
With these arrests, the number of university employees taken into custody has now reached five. The three others — Roshan Lal, Rohit and Deepak — are currently lodged in jail. Seventeen other university staff have already been booked in the case, which was first exposed by The Tribune in January.
Sources said Jitender was in contact with one of the three original accused in the case and roped in Sonu to leak the papers. “Sonu was posted at the examination centre from where MBBS question papers were leaked on May 15, 17 and 19,” said sources.
The modus operandi was elaborate. Images of the leaked papers were sent via WhatsApp to a network of MBBS students from other batches, who were then directed to rewrite the answer sheets on behalf of original examinees.
“On each of the three days, students completed forged answer sheets at the residence of the accused in a local housing society,” sources revealed. “Two students wrote six answer sheets each, another wrote four, and a fourth wrote three. These fake sheets were then swapped with the original ones in the university’s secrecy branch with the help of insiders.”
During police interrogation, one of the accused in custody confessed that a deal had been struck with Jitender for Rs 30,000 per leaked paper.
Before making the arrests, the police cross-verified the disclosures made by the key accused. “Now, other employees named in the FIR will also be questioned,” said a source. Authorities at UHSR have already granted the police permission to interrogate 14 more employees suspected of involvement.
Confirming the arrests, DSP Dalip Singh, who is heading the investigation, said, “We recovered Rs 10,000 from each of the accused. Both have confessed to leaking the papers. Further investigation is underway.”
The scam reportedly involves the systematic smuggling of answer sheets during annual and supplementary MBBS exams, with students re-attempting answers at external locations. These manipulated answer sheets were then stealthily resubmitted to the university’s examination branch, helping candidates illegally secure passing marks.
