Women To Ride First On Indore Metro’s Inaugural Run On Ahilyabai Holkar Jayanti

Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In a symbolic gesture of empowerment and inclusivity, women passengers will take the first official ride on the Indore Metro during its inaugural run on May 31, which coincides with the birth anniversary of Devi Ahilyabai Holkar, one of Indore’s most revered historical figures.

The announcement was made by Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya during a press briefing held on Wednesday. “We want women from all walks of life—from Swachhata Didis to IT professionals from companies like TCS—to participate in this inaugural ride,” said Vijayvargiya. “This is not just about launching a train service, but also about launching a movement toward safe, accessible, and inclusive urban mobility.”

The first phase of the Indore Metro will operate on a 6-kilometer priority stretch between Gandhinagar and Super Corridor Station-3, marking the city's entry into the era of high-capacity public transit.

Final preparations underway

With just days left for the launch, final touches are being applied to Metro stations and infrastructure. Stations along the route are being beautified and upgraded, with key commuter facilities already in place. These include:

* Digital passenger information systems

* Real-time arrival/departure displays

* Ticket counters and emergency exits

* Enhanced cleanliness protocols

The administrative building at the Gandhinagar Metro depot is fully operational, and the Metro office has officially relocated there from its previous location in Vijay Nagar. The depot now serves as the central control and logistics hub for Metro operations in Indore.

PM to inaugurate virtually

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the Indore Metro from Bhopal during his visit to Madhya Pradesh on May 31. He is also scheduled to inaugurate new airports in Satna and Datia during the same event, underlining the Centre’s focus on boosting infrastructure across the state.

Focus on green and smart development

Officials have highlighted the Metro project’s attention to sustainability and urban environmental responsibility. Green spaces have been developed around the depot, and open spaces have been managed with eco-friendly landscaping, reinforcing Indore’s commitment to smart and sustainable urban growth.

A milestone for Indore

Speaking after reviewing the preparations at the Gandhi Nagar Metro station, Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav said, “The Metro is not just a transit system—it’s a symbol of Indore’s transformation into a world-class city. The inclusion of women in the inaugural run further emphasizes our city’s progressive spirit.”

With the launch of the Metro, Indore joins the ranks of India’s rapidly modernizing urban centers, offering safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation for its citizens.
