Mumbai Crime News: Jogeshwari Man Defrauded Of ₹11 Lakh By Acquaintance In Fake US Hotel Job Scam; Suspect On Run

Mumbai: An alarming instance of fraud has emerged in the Jogeshwari region, where a stockbroker was reportedly deceived out of nearly ₹11 lakh by an acquaintance who enticed him with a phony job proposal for a supervisor role at a well-known hotel in the United States. The Jogeshwari Police have filed a case of fraud and criminal breach of trust against the suspect, named Ali Istiyak Ahmed. He is presently evading capture.

As stated in the complaint, the victim, Amey Shrikant Jambhale, who lives in Jogeshwari and works as a stockbroker, had shown interest in pursuing a job overseas. Understanding this, the defendant Ali, familiar to Jambhale, came to him with a proposal for a supervisory position at a hotel in the US.

In July 2024, Ali invited Jambhale and his uncle to a Jogeshwari hotel to discuss the job offer. He told them that the overall expense of obtaining the job, which includes visa and travel, would be approximately ₹12 lakh. After getting a favorable reply, Ali gathered Jambhale’s academic records and took ₹1.25 lakh for the visa and flight reservation steps.

A couple of days later, Ali shared what looked like an air ticket and visa papers through WhatsApp, causing Jambhale to have confidence in him. Trusting that the offer was authentic, he later made payments to the accused totaling ₹10.75 lakh in parts. Nonetheless, Ali did not offer any formal appointment letter or employment agreement. His phone ultimately became unobtainable, causing doubt.

Noticing he had been duped, Jambhale went to the Jogeshwari Police Station and filed an official complaint. Following preliminary verification, the authorities filed a case against Ali Ahmed under applicable sections of the Indian Penal Code for deception and criminal breach of trust. A manhunt has been initiated to locate the suspect, who escaped the vicinity prior to the FIR being filed. Investigation is under progress.
