What Did Donald Trump Call Elon Musk After His DOGE Exit? Find Out
Elon Musk’s brief but headline-making stint in public service came to an end on Friday, with US President Donald Trump offering glowing praise for the billionaire entrepreneur. Musk officially stepped down as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a Trump-era initiative aimed at reducing bureaucratic bloat and government waste.
"Elon is terrific!" Trump declared on Truth Social, announcing that the two would hold a joint press conference in the Oval Office. “This will be his last day, but not really, because he will, always, be with us, helping all the way,” the President added.
The press conference, scheduled for 1:30 pm EST (11:00 pm IST), is expected to serve as Musk’s formal farewell from Washington — though Trump hinted that Musk’s involvement with the administration may continue in less official capacities.
Musk Reflects On His DOGE Days
In a farewell statement, Musk expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the DOGE initiative, a role he held as a Special Government Employee.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk said. “The DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government.”
His departure comes amid rising scrutiny and protests over his dual role in government and business. Still, Musk remained firm in his commitment to lean governance, echoing the mission that the DOGE department — named in a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Dogecoin cryptocurrency — set out to accomplish.
A Complicated Exit After Tax Bill Criticism
Musk’s exit also followed sharp public criticism of a recent tax policy championed by Trump’s administration. Speaking candidly, Musk questioned the practicality of the legislation: “A bill can be big, or it can be beautiful. But I don’t know if it can be both. My personal opinion,” he remarked.
The tax critique marked a rare public divergence from the Trump playbook, especially notable given Musk’s deep political alignment with the President. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO was not only the biggest donor to Trump’s 2024 campaign but also a frequent presence on the campaign trail and at White House events. Trump famously called Musk a "star" during his victory speech, shortly before appointing him to lead DOGE.
Back To Business, Literally
Musk’s departure from Washington appears to be a return to familiar territory — corporate grind. Earlier this week, he mentioned he was back to “spending 24/7 at work” and sleeping in conference rooms as he reimmerses himself in his business ventures.
His tenure at DOGE was marked by aggressive cost-cutting, shutdowns of redundant agencies, and an ambitious — if controversial — push to streamline federal operations. While he began pulling back from government duties in late April, his resignation marks the official close of his role.
Still, with Trump’s parting words suggesting a continuing behind-the-scenes role, it’s unlikely this is the last Washington will see of Elon Musk.
