Amid US President Donald Trump's warning that he would bomb Iran if it doesn't agree to a deal, a poll has revealed that over 57 per cent of Americans favour US military action against Iran’s nukes. Besides, 77 per cent of Americans are concerned that Iran may be developing a nuclear weapon.

A poll conducted by the Rasmussen Institute said that Americans were overwhelmingly concerned about Iran's nuclear weapons programme and are worried about the possibility of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons. Over 44 per cent of those who participated in the poll said they were "very concerned".

The poll conducted in the backdrop of Trump's warning found that while 28 per cent "strongly supported" US action against Iran, 57 per cent "would support" a military action. Only 30 per cent said they would oppose a US strike against Iran, of which 17 per cent said they would " strongly oppose" such a military action. Only 13 per cent said they were not sure.

Was Trump aggressive towards Iran?

Trump had warned Iran that it would face serious repercussions if talks failed. "If they don't make a deal, there will be bombing," Trump told NBC News in a telephonic interview before the talks began. "It will be bombing the likes of which they have never seen before."

He had also launched a scathing attack on Iran, accusing the Islamic Republic's leadership of "neglect and mismanagement that have left the country plagued by rolling blackouts lasting for hours a day". Many Iranians had called Trump's words when he charged the Iranian leaders of "turning green farmland into dry deserts" a painful truth.

However, Americans were divided over Trump's "aggression" towards Iran. According to the poll, 26 per cent believed that, in his dealings with Iran, Trump has been too aggressive. But the same number – 26 per cent– say he hasn’t been aggressive enough. Only 15 per cent are not sure about Trump's response while 33 per cent think Trump’s response to Iran has been about right.

Seventy-five per cent of those who voted for Trump in last year’s election would support a US strike to destroy Iran’s nuclear weapons programme, as compared to 42 per cent of Kamala Harris voters.
