Rent, bills not paid for months: Landlord in Canada faces financial strain after Indian tenants’ alleged Khalistan support

An Indian landlord in Ontario, Canada, who had moved to the US due to his work, has alleged his tenants have reportedly not paid rent or utility bills since January this year. A video of the house and an interview with the landlord have been posted by independent journalist Nitin Chopra on X, where a Khalistan flag can be clearly seen tied to a post outside the house.

“Another Victim Landlord in #Ontario. Tenants have not paid rent since Jan 2025, nor are they paying utility bills. What should a landlord do? When can we fix the system? Enough is Enough!” Chopra wrote in his post. Raman Kumar, the property owner, said that five students moved into his house in October 2024 and paid rent until December. Since January, however, they have stopped paying the monthly rent, which Kumar says is around 3,300 Canadian dollars, as well as utility bills. “I’m paying the mortgage, property tax, and insurance out of my own pocket,” Kumar said. “This is putting me under extreme mental stress. I myself live in a rented house and have my own expenses. These tenants are making my life miserable.” Kumar also claimed that the Khalistan flag tied outside the house was put up without his permission. “I am very scared by these kinds of activities, and the neighbourhood is also unhappy,” he said. “Authorities need to intervene. We’ve always lived peacefully as a community, and this is creating unnecessary tensions.” He alleged that he rented the home to five people but believes more are living there. “I can’t give the exact number, but there are a lot of people coming and going,” he added. He also said that the neighborhood has lodged complaints as they are disturbed, especially during the night. “I’ve started legal proceedings, but it will take time,” he said.
