Amazon Prime India releases trailer for Karan Johar-led 'The Traitors' adaptation

On May 30, Prime Video India released the trailer for their new reality TV show ‘The Traitors’. Hosted by entertainment tycoon Karan Johar, the show is set against the backdrop of a grand, mysterious palace.

Inspired from an American reality show of the same name, this Indian adaptation will feature 20 internet sensations as contestants, with Johar as their enigmatic host.

The show revolves around the central idea that three out of the twenty participants are secretly murderers and will murder their fellow cast members throughout the course of the show. The innocent players are tasked with bringing the truth to light and uncovering the real culprits behind the murders.

As the trailer unfolds, contestants are caught in a frenzy, bidding their careers on whether they are a traitor or not. 

“In this ruthless game, trust is rare and betrayal everywhere,” the game show's slogan read.

The sensational casting for the show has created waves online. It covers a wide range of personalities, from Shilpa Shetty’s husband Raj Kundra to veteran actor Ashish Vidyarthi and from aunt-niece duo Maheep Kapoor to rapper Raftaar. Other players include filmmaker Mukesh Chhabra, astrologer Janvi Gaur and Anshula Kapoor.

Produced by BBC Studios India, the show also features fashion influencers like Sufi Motiwala and Uorfi Javed, along with internet personalities Apoorva Mukhija (also known as the Rebel Kid), Nikita Luther, Purav Jha and standup comedian Harsh Gujral.

Actors such as Karan Kundrra, Jasmine Bhasin, Lakshmi Manchu, Elnaaz Norouzi, Jannat Zubair, Sudhanshu Pandey and Sahil Salathia were also cast in this television extravaganza.

The trailer also already hints at potential spats between the contestants. With a premise that encourages the 20 contestants to be calculative, strategise and play detective, misunderstandings and conflicts are bound to rise. 

“Respect cannot be demanded, Uorfi,” declares Apoorva in the trailer.

The controversies surrounding the series and its contestants have led to a significant marketing buzz for the show. 

The trailer ends with Johar’s interesting remark: “Traitors, you’re playing them all like a piano.”

The show will stream on Amazon Prime Video from June 12, with new episodes releasing every Thursday at 8:00 PM.
