Vicky Kaushal in talks to bring Guru Dutt to life on screen

Vicky Kaushal, best known for capturing the hearts of both audiences and critics with his performances in Sardar Udham and Sam Bahadur, is reportedly under discussions to step into the lead role of the widely lauded filmmaker and actor Guru Dutt in an upcoming biopic.
According to a recent report published by Mid-Day, Rajat Agrawal, COO and Director at Ultra Media, confirmed that initial talks are underway for a full-length biopic on Guru Dutt. He shares, “Biopics are always challenging because they need to emulate an individual’s greatness and achievements. We would be happy to collaborate with producers and a modern-day director who is a fanatic of Guru Dutt, and see where the project goes”. Agrawal further revealed that he has already begun discussions with two acclaimed directors to bring Dutt’s complex journey to the screen. “I have spoken to two highly revered directors, who are interested in recreating his movies into web series, and also making a film on his life. Once we have something definite, we can talk about it in detail. We are in touch with his family members”.

When asked about who could best capture the complexity and sensitivity of Guru Dutt on-screen, Agrawal confessed Vicky Kaushal was an ideal choice. He remarked, “Naming one actor would be difficult as there is a plethora of talent, but I feel Vicky Kaushal can bring Guru Duttji’s emotional depth”.
Earlier this month, Ultra Media & Entertainment Group showcased revived versions of Guru Dutt’s timeless classics—Pyaasa, Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chaudhvin Ka Chand and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival 2025. In the lead-up to Dutt’s 100th birth anniversary on July 9, a week-long series of tributes is being planned. As part of this initiative, the restored films will be re-released in Indian theatres.
Agrawal elaborates, “All his movies have been restored in the original black-and-white version to give the same nostalgic feel. However, we are looking at colourizing a few songs to see the audience’s reaction. There will also be curated exhibitions and panel discussions on his timeless legacy by prominent filmmakers.”

In addition to these celebrations, the media group has also revealed their plans for an expansive homage that could include a biopic and web series adaptations of his most iconic films. An initiative that seeks to preserve the spirit of Dutt’s artistry while reintroducing his cinematic brilliance to a new generation of viewers.
Apart from being eyed for the Guru Dutt biopic, Vicky Kaushal will soon make his appearance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated epic Love & War, co-starring Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt. However, production has faced a temporary setback due to the monsoon rains in Mumbai wreaking havoc on the film’s elaborate set, leading to delays in the shooting schedule.
