Operation Shield: Mock drills in Mohali Panchkula on May 31
As part of efforts to strengthen disaster preparedness and national security, mock drills will be conducted in Panchkula and Mohali on May 31 under “Operation SHIELD”. The exercise will take place at two designated locations, focusing on ensuring swift and safe response by emergency teams during crisis situations.
Deputy Commissioner Monika Gupta has directed all relevant departments to carry out the drill in a manner that closely simulates real-life emergency conditions. Following an air raid siren at 5 pm, mock operations will commence, including deployment of relief teams, road monitoring, emergency medical services, and safe evacuation of civilians in identified sensitive areas.
The drill will also assess the responsiveness of communication systems and coordination among departments. Citizens are urged to seek immediate shelter upon hearing the siren, avoid spreading or believing in rumours, and rely solely on verified updates from official sources.
“This is not merely a routine drill but a vital preparation for real emergencies. Public participation plays a crucial role in enhancing administrative efficiency and safeguarding lives,” Gupta said.
As part of the drill, a district-wide blackout will be observed from 8 pm to 8.15 pm. Residents are requested to switch off all indoor and outdoor lights, refrain from using flashlights or mobile lights, and remain vigilant. Emergency services will remain operational during this period.
A mock drill under, meanwhile, will be conducted at BPCL Lalru, Dera Bassi, at 6 pm. Deputy Commissioner Komal Mittal said the exercise was being carried out in accordance with the directions of the Deputy Commandant General, Punjab Home Guards & Civil Defence Department, and as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
An air raid warning siren will be sounded in the area prior to the commencement of the operation. Following the siren, a mock rescue operation will be carried out to simulate emergency response procedures for rescuing individuals present at the site.
The Deputy Commissioner further informed that during the drill, traffic lights and vehicle headlights in the vicinity will be turned off to replicate real-time emergency conditions.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Dera Bassi, Amit Gupta added that all necessary arrangements have been completed for the successful execution of the Civil Defence Exercise at BPCL Lalru.
