Janhit: Political Storm Brews Over ‘Sindoor’, Faith and Vote Bank in Spotlight | ABP NEWS
After Operation Sindoor, the word "Sindoor" has become one of the most trending topics across India—not just as a symbol of suhaag (marital status) but now also as a badge of patriotism and valor. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his recent rallies and roadshows, has referred to this operation as a reflection of India's military strength. Women were seen dressed in sindoori sarees, and some even drew a symbolic sindur tilak from forehead to nose in support. However, this symbol of pride has taken a sharp political turn. The Kerala Congress posted an image of PM Modi with the controversial slogan “One Nation, One Husband”, a satirical jab triggered by Mamata Banerjee’s earlier comments. This drew sharp reactions from BJP, with spokesperson Sambit Patra slamming Congress for demeaning the cultural and traditional value of sindur, and suggesting such language lowers the dignity of women and elected leaders. Congress leaders Ragini Nayak and Supriya Shrinate doubled down, accusing the BJP of “saffronizing” womanhood and misusing sacred symbols for political mileage. BJP has responded by calling the viral claims—like ‘ghar ghar sindur baantenge’ campaign starting June 9—completely fake, posting newspaper clippings marked “FAKE” on their official handles. The metaphorical “Ramesh Babu,” repeated throughout the viral narrative, refers to political figures or groups who, according to critics, are seen trying to “distribute sindur” inappropriately—interpreted as a symbolic criticism of BJP’s aggressive cultural messaging.
