BJP Fields Jiwan Gupta As Candidate For Ludhiana West Assembly Bypoll

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Jiwan Gupta as its official candidate for the upcoming by-election in the Ludhiana West Assembly constituency. After several rounds of internal discussions and deliberations, the party finalized Gupta’s name, bringing clarity to the much-anticipated candidate announcement ahead of the nomination deadline.

Jiwan Gupta, a veteran leader within BJP Punjab, has previously served as the party’s state general secretary and is currently a member of its core group. Known for his organizational skills and grassroots connection, Gupta has played an active role in strengthening the party's base in the state. His name had been under consideration for the Ludhiana West seat in past elections, underscoring his longstanding association with the constituency.

The Ludhiana West seat fell vacant following the death of sitting MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The Election Commission of India has scheduled the bypoll for June 19, 2025, with counting of votes to take place on June 23. The nomination window, which opened on May 26, will close on June 2. Scrutiny of papers is set for June 3, while candidates will have until June 5 to withdraw their nominations.

With the announcement of Jiwan Gupta, the political contest in Ludhiana West is now fully shaped into a four-way battle. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, who submitted his nomination on May 30. The Congress has nominated former cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has put forward Parupkar Singh Ghumman.

Political observers believe the BJP's decision to nominate a strong organizational leader like Gupta signals the party’s focus on consolidating its urban vote base and making deeper inroads into Punjab’s key constituencies.

As campaign activity intensifies, Ludhiana West is poised to witness a high-stakes contest with four major political forces in the fray.
