Mounika, a resident of Ashok Nagar, had reportedly developed a relationship with Swami, a youth from Bhupalapally district, after connecting with him on Facebook. The online acquaintance soon turned into an alleged extramarital affair.
According to media reports, Swami had been staying at Mounika's residence for the past three days, which drew the attention and ire of the local residents.
In a now viral video of the incident, enraged, locals reportedly took the law into their own hands and decided to punish the duo for their immoral activity. They tied up both Mounika and Swami with ropes and brought them out in public. What followed was a disturbing act — a so-called "purification ritual" was performed on Swami to cleanse him of his alleged moral transgression.
Videos of the incident have since circulated locally, drawing mixed reactions. Some locals claimed the act was to preserve community values, while others questioned the legality and ethics of such vigilante actions.
According to media reports, after the public shaming, both individuals were handed over to the police. Authorities have confirmed the detention and are currently investigating the incident, including the actions of the local residents involved in the ritual and restraint.
