Mumbai News: Worli BDD Chawl Residents To Get New Homes By July; MHADA Assures Key Handover, Amenities Ready
THE Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has announced that residents of the Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls in Worli will receive the keys to their new homes ahead of the upcoming Shravan month which starts in July. Earlier the plan was hand over possession in March this year.
The assurance was given on Saturday by Milind Borikar, CEO of MHADA’s Mumbai Board, during a public interaction held in the presence of Mumbai Suburban Guardian Minister Ashish Shelar.
The high-rise towers built in the first phase of the Worli BDD Chawl Redevelopment Project are now ready, but some resident concerns and demands remain. To address these, Minister Ashish Shelar personally visited the site on Thursday, inspecting the towers and interacting with residents to understand their issues.
Residents raised concerns about adequate water supply in the new buildings. In response, Minister Ashish Shelar directed MHADA and BMC officials to install new water lines based on the increased population of the redeveloped towers.
One of the parking towers remains incomplete, prompting Minister Shelar to instruct officials to temporarily demolish two adjacent old buildings to create additional parking space — a proposal MHADA approved. CEO Milind Borikar added that parking slots would be allocated through a lottery system.
Responding to residents' demand for swift possession, Borikar also assured that piped gas connections and other essential amenities will be in place by then.
What is BDD Chawls redevelopment:
The skyline of Mumbai is about to see one of its most significant urban transformations with the ongoing redevelopment of the Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) chawls. These homes are located in the newly built wings D and E of Building No. 1, a crucial phase in the project. This marks the first wave of residents who will move into modern, spacious apartments that promise a substantial improvement over the cramped living conditions they once endured.
The redevelopment at Worli is divided into two phases. Phase 1 focuses on the rehabilitation of 5,198 residential units, each with a carpet area of 500 square feet. This phase also includes the construction of commercial spaces and a proposed sale of tenements, including 1,860 for the Middle Income Group (MIG) and 1,036 for the Higher Income Group (HIG), along with a significant 180,000-square-meter commercial building.
In total, the entire Worli BDD redevelopment project is costing a massive Rs 22,901.25 crore, with Phase 1 set to deliver a significant portion of the overall rehabilitation. Phase 2 will further expand the available housing with an additional 3,974 rehabilitation units, as well as more sale tenements and vital public infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and community spaces.
The transformative nature of this project, is aimed at upgrading the lives of over 15,500 families. “The redevelopment of BDD chawls is a transformative initiative aimed at improving the living conditions of families who have spent decades in outdated and cramped conditions. With modern homes offering 500 square feet of space.
