World No-Tobacco Day: 48 students take oath

An oath was administered to 48 students during a pledge ceremony organised to mark World No-Tobacco Day at Dayanand Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Kurukshetra, on Saturday. The ceremony was organised under the joint aegis of the Youth Red Cross Society, Legal Literacy Cell, NSS and the NCC. While administering a pledge to students, Principal Upasana Ahuja said, today, No-Tobacco Day was being celebrated all over the world. The purpose of marking the day was to make society aware of the ill effects of tobacco consumption. Due to the negative effects of tobacco, more than 80 lakh deaths occurred every year around the world, she added, noting that 12 lakh people who did not consume tobacco themselves died every year due to exposure to cigarette smoke. She exhorted all students to stay away from tobacco and make their family members aware of the harmful effects of it. She said quitting smoking controlled blood pressure, improved blood circulation, prevented cancer of oral organs, ensured proper functioning of lungs and reduced the risk of heart attacks.
