Sewerage workers resume work after seven-day strike

The Sewerman Union, which had been on strike since May 24 in the city, has returned to work following assurances from officials and the government that their next salary will be increased. The union members resumed work by clearing the blocked sewerage in Premgarh. Union leader Pradhan Naresh Kumar informed that they have been assured their salary will be raised to Rs 25,000. He warned that if they receive less than this amount, the union will be compelled to resume their struggle. If the salary demand is met, they will then decide on their next strategy to press for permanent employment status. The union members also cautioned that if they face harassment this time, they will not remain silent and will escalate their fight at the Punjab level. During the event, President of the Safai Karamchari Federation Raja Hans and President of the Outsourced Employees Union Kamal Bhatti expressed support, stating that the sewermen’s demands are legitimate and the government has a duty to meet them. They thanked the union for deciding to return to work after understanding the city residents’ problems. However, they warned that if the government fails to fulfil the promise of a salary increase, all unions will unite in protest, holding the corporation officials and the government responsible.
