What began as a night of footballing triumph for Paris Saint-Germain turned volatile as thousands of jubilant fans poured into the streets of Paris to celebrate their club’s emphatic 5-0 Champions League final victory over Inter Milan. The celebrations, however, quickly spiralled into disorder, According to Guardian at least 81 people were arrested as violence flared and riot police were forced into action.
According to report by The Sun, Dozens of fires erupted throughout Paris as the night wore on. In several neighbourhoods, scenes turned chaotic with videos showing bicycles and mattresses set ablaze, sending plumes of black smoke into the air.
Police clad in riot gear were seen charging toward groups of fans suspected of vandalism and launching projectiles. Paris police later confirmed that most of the 280+ arrests were linked to public disorder and the illegal possession of fireworks. Disturbances were concentrated near PSG’s home ground and in the heart of the capital, where tens of thousands had gathered to watch the match on giant public screens.
In the southeastern city of Grenoble, a car rammed into a crowd of PSG fans celebrating in the street, injuring four members of a single family two of them seriously. The driver turned himself in to authorities and was taken into custody.
Despite the disturbances, the city is preparing for a massive turnout on Sunday, as the PSG squad is set to parade the Champions League trophy along the Champs-Élysées.
