China’s dangerous new move in Nepal, Oli and Prachanda out of race, Xi Jinping betting on…, tension for India due to…
Kathmandu: China has again become active in Nepal, and this time it is requesting the Nepali communist leaders to unite and form a working coalition in the country. To implement this, the Dragon has chosen former President Vidya Devi Bhandari instead of KP Sharma Oli. However, Beijing wants Oli’s UML party to remain in power. If the communist alliance becomes strong in Nepal, then it can increase India’s tension, as these communist parties are considered as pro-China.
China bets on Vidya Devi Bhandari
As per a report, former Nepalese President Bidya Devi Bhandari is on a visit to China. The visit is taking place after an official invitation from Beijing. During her visit, President Bhandari attended a program organised in Gansu province with Chinese Vice President Han Zhen. In the program, strategy to strengthen Nepal-China relations and form a new communist alliance in the country was discussed. Specific people in Nepal sees the visit as a direct interference of China in the politics of the country.
Nepalese People Are Troubled By Communist Parties
Nepal’s communist parties have suffered a decline in public support, benefiting the Nepali Congress and those advocating for a return to a constitutional monarchy and a Hindu state. Despite repeated attempts by China to reconcile the CPN-UML and CPN-MC, internal divisions and leadership conflicts between KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal have thwarted reunification efforts.
Oli-Prachanda’s Partner For Benefits
Both parties announced their alliance in October 2017 on the eve of parliamentary elections under an agreement which was brokered by China. The two parties contested the elections together and won a majority in the lower house and six of the seven provincial assemblies.
In May 2018, both parties formally merged to form a new entity – the Nepal Communist Party (NCP).
Game Between Oli And Prachanda
Disagreements, primarily concerning power distribution, emerged between Oli and Dahal following the formation of their party. A power-sharing agreement involving a rotating prime ministership was broken by Oli, causing a rift between the two leaders and their supporters, ultimately resulting in the party’s dissolution in March 2021.
Even China Could Not Make Oli And Prachanda Friends
China made extensive diplomatic efforts to reconcile K.P. Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal, employing its ambassador to Kathmandu, Hou Yanqi, for nearly ten months. Despite numerous meetings with key Nepali Communist Party figures, including Oli, Dahal, and President Bidya Devi Bhandari, these mediation attempts ultimately failed. This was primarily attributed to Oli’s unwillingness to compromise on power-sharing with Dahal, leading to the NCP’s dissolution in March 2021 and the subsequent revival of their individual parties.
