At least 20 killed as rain lashes northeast; IMD predicts heavy rainfall for 7 days | Weather updates

At least 20 persons died in rain-related incidents in northeastern states as heavy downpour lashed the region in the past two days. Northeastern states Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram have been severely affected by landslides and flash floods. 

 

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue in the region for the next seven days. Isolated very heavy rainfall is very likely over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on June 1, the weather agency said in a bulletin on Sunday. An orange alert has been issued for northeastern states.

 

The IMD has predicted heavy rainfall with thunderstorm in southern states during the next three days. IMD has predicted isolated heavy rainfall over Kerala, Mahe and Karnataka till June 4.

At least five persons were killed in landslides in Assam on Saturday. As per a bulletin from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), five persons died in landslides reported from  Kamrup Metropolitan district. As per the state disaster management authority, floods were reported in six districts and a total of 10,150 people have been affected by 'urban floods'. Authorities have opened relief camps and distribution centres to assist the affected persons.

 

NDRF and SDRF personnel have been deployed in affected areas and they are evacuating people to safer areas. As per ASDMA, on Saturday, the Brahmaputra was flowing near the danger level in Dibrugarh, Ranganadi in Lakhimpur, Dhansiri in Numaligarh, Jia Bharali in Sonitpur, Kopili in Kampur and Beki in Barpeta.

 

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday that the state was facing an 'abnormal situation' due to incessant downpours caused by massive cloud cover over several parts of the northeast.
