Northeast rains: Red alert issued for Assam, Meghalaya; Heavy rainfall predicted over the next 5 days | Weather updates

Heavy rains continue to lash northeast India and the death toll in rain-related incidents has increased to 30. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland.
In a weather bulletin issued on Monday, the IMD predicted moderate rainfall is likely to continue over northeast India during the next seven days and heavy rainfall has been forecast during the next five days. The weather agency has predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on Monday, and Assam and Meghalaya for two days.
At least 30 persons died in rain-related incidents in northeastern states during the past two days. According to disaster management authorities, eight people died in rain-related incidents in Assam and nine in Arunachal Pradesh; five people died in a landslide in Mizoram. Relief camps have been set up and NDRF, SDRF and personnel from armed forces are involved in rescue operations.
In south, the weather agency has predicted moderate rainfall with thunderstorm over many places in Kerala, Mahe and coastal Karnataka for three days. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Kerala and Mahe during June 2-4, IMD said in a bulletin.
The weather agency has issued a yellow alert for Kasargod and Kannur districts on Monday. Though schools reopened after summer vacation on Monday in the state, the holiday has been extended for institutions being used as relief camps.
