Scott Derrickson's 'Black Phone 2' trailer drops, promises more scares and screams

After a series of enigmatic teasers that curiously kept the audience at wait, the first ever official trailer of Black Phone 2 is finally out! Released at CCXP Mexico by Universal and Blumhouse pictures, the trailer promises a sequel that is more violent, scarier and graphic.

The 2022 original, directed by Scott Derrickson, was a surprise hit, making $161 million against a working budget of $18 million. The sequel stars Ethan Hawke, Miguel Mora, Mason Thames, Madeleine McGraw and Jeremy Davies who reprise their roles, with Demian Bichir joining the cast.

Set years after the first movie, the follow-up horror thriller shows a now teen Finney (Thames) and Gwen (McGraw), who encounter another Colorado winter. While the first movie seemingly culminated with the death of the villain Grabber (Hawke), the new film sees the return of Grabber, who calls up Finney using a black payphone near the camp. Finney, who tries to question the resurrected Grabber’s existence, is met with the words, “You, of all people, know that dead is just a word,” setting an ominous tone for the movie. In a climax, the trailer unleashes various horror scenes from the film.

Set to be released in theatres this October 17th, Derrickson spoke about the horror elements in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. "A middle school coming-of-age horror film is fundamentally different from a high school coming-of-age horror story. There’s an escalation of intensity because of that.” Furthermore, the sequel draws inspiration from Derrickson’s own high school experiences in the Rocky Mountains — the harsh winter landscape heightens the film’s chilling atmosphere.

Ever since the release of the trailer, horror enthusiasts have taken to social media, expressing their appreciation of the trailer. “Looks like the wait just got real, October can’t come soon enough for this one”, said an X user, whereas another commented, “October 17 is circled on my calendar. Ready for the scares.”

The team remains reticent about any further details regarding the movie, keeping fans on tenterhooks.
