According to RBI data released on Monday, these notes are still considered legal tender.
RBI had announced the phased withdrawal of ₹ 2000 notes from circulation on 19 May 2023. At that time, notes worth a total of ₹ 3.56 lakh crore were in circulation. According to the latest data, by 31 May 2025, this amount has come down to just ₹ 6,181 crore. That is, a total of 98.26% of ₹ 2000 notes have returned to the system.
Where and how to deposit ₹ 2000 notes
Although the facility of depositing or exchanging ₹ 2000 notes in banks was discontinued on 7 October 2023, people can still deposit them in 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank of India.
RBI also informed that people can deposit their ₹ 2000 notes directly into their bank account by sending them to RBI offices through the postal department (India Post).
Notes not banned, but out of circulation
It is worth noting that ₹2000 notes are still legal tender i.e. they have not been declared invalid. But, they are no longer being issued as new notes and people are being appealed to gradually take them out of the system.
