Capturing hearts from Assam to Britain: Binita Chetry bags Second Runner-Up title on Britain's Got Talent

Binita Chetry, a prodigious nine-year-old hailing from Assam, has paved her way into the annals of Britain’s Got Talent history. As the first Indian to ascend to the grand finale of the prestigious reality show, she charmed audiences, leaving them mesmerised while bagging the second runner-up title. Netizens have since celebrated her extraordinary feat on social media.

The grand finale of the show, which took place at the United Kingdom on May 31, saw an extraordinary curation of budding talent across the globe.

The title was won by Harry Moulding, a British magician, who not only secured a £250,000 cash prize but also got the honor of showcasing his talent at the Royal Variety Performance later in 2025. The runner-up position was secured by the LED dance ensemble, The Blackouts.

Assam’s Binita Chetry’s triumph on Britain’s Got Talent 2025 has struck a wave of national pride across India. She also earned recognition from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who lauded the nine-year-old for her performance representing India on the global stage.

Sharing a video along with a heartfelt congratulatory message, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised Binita Chetry for her achievement. He wrote: 

“Dancing her way to glory. Many congratulations to our very own Binita Chetry on securing the 3rd spot at the Britain’s Got Talent finale. Her performances have mesmerised audiences from the Brahmaputra to the Thames and made us all proud.”

Binita also expressed her gratitude to the Assamese CM in a reply: 

“I want to personally meet our Chief Minister Himanta Mama, in Guwahati, and thank him for his immense support and blessings in my journey. I hope this message reaches him, and I get the opportunity to meet him”.

At the time of her audition, Binita Chetry revealed that her dream was to win the competition to buy a “pink princess house”. Her journey on Britain’s Got Talent was a compilation of powerful acts, culminating in a show-stopping finale set to Tears for Fears' “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, which established her as the ultimate standout talent.

Coming all the way from the Talbalijan village near Bokajan, Binita Chetry takes her roots from a humble (yet determined) family background.

Her father, Amar Chetry, is an owner of a small broiler chicken farm. Recognising his daughter’s talent, he made sure she received proper training and assistance. Her training was arranged, first in Guwahati, and later in Jaipur, under the mentorship of her aunt Amrita Devi and renowned choreographer Hardik Rawat, according to Nanda Kirati Dewan, coordinator of the BGT Binita Chetry Support Group.

Binita also and thanked her constant support system, acknowledging the financial aid given by Tuliram Ronghang, the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). She also appreciated the encouragement she received from local MLA and Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Numal Momin.

The young talent’s journey has garnered her acclaim throughout India, garnering praise not only from the Chief Minister but also from industrialists like Anand Mahindra, who congratulated her talented act in his social media. Binita Chetry’s success is a testament to her talent and determination.
