Xiaomi SU7 Ultra Becomes Fastest EV at Nürburgring, Beating Porsche’s Record

Xiaomi’s electric vehicle (EV) ambitions received a significant boost after its SU7 Ultra model set a new lap record at Germany’s legendary Nürburgring circuit. The car, a production version of Xiaomi’s high-performance electric sedan, clocked an impressive lap time of 7:04.957, becoming the fastest production EV to circle the track.

Announced by Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun on Chinese social media platform Weibo, the record-breaking performance dethroned the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, which had held the top spot with a time of 7:07.55 since September 2023.

"I believe this record will be broken again in the near future," Lei Jun wrote in his Weibo post. The image accompanying his post confirmed the feat was achieved on April 1, 2025. The record-setting lap was driven by professional racer Vincent Radermecker, who also piloted the car during its earlier prototype tests.

From Concept To Performance Beast

The production model’s achievement follows the prototype’s October 2024 test, where it posted a time of 6:46.874, making it the fastest four-door car ever tested on the track at the time. While the prototype’s time was quicker, the production car's record is notable because it adheres to all road-legal standards.

Xiaomi officially launched the SU7 sedan on March 28, 2024, directly competing with Tesla’s Model 3. The SU7 Ultra, launched in February, comes equipped with a staggering 1,548 Ps of power. Its pricing starts at RMB 529,900 ($73,740), more than double the base SU7’s price tag of RMB 215,900.

Strong Demand Despite Criticism

Despite some early criticism, ranging from front hood ventilation issues to concerns over power restrictions, the SU7 Ultra has maintained robust consumer interest. By March 2, Lei Jun announced that the vehicle had already attracted 19,000 firm orders, with more than 10,000 confirmed. This figure surpassed the company’s annual target even before the first quarter ended.

Xiaomi is now gearing up for its next EV milestone with the YU7, its first electric SUV. Unveiled on May 22, the YU7 is expected to launch officially in July, expanding Xiaomi’s growing automotive footprint. Pricing details for the SUV remain under wraps.
