'Why Do We Have Ministries': Congress Slams Amit Shah's 'Accidents Can't Be Prevented' Remark

Congress leader Pawan Khera has slammed Union Home Minister Amit Shah over his statement saying "accidents can't be prevented" in the aftermath of the fatal Air India plane crash.

At least 265 people including 241 onboard AI171 Ahmedabad to London Gatwick died in the crash which took place minutes after take-off from Sardar Vallabhai International Airport.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the crash site on Thursday and took stock of the situation.

Speaking to reporters from the crash site, Shah was briefed on the situation touching upon government action and emergency response.

Expressing grief on the loss of lives, Shah also said it was an accident and "no one can stop an accident". He also praised the authorities' "alertness" in responding to the situation.

Congress Slams Shah

Congress leader Pawan Khera slammed Shah for his remark saying he should have offered a promise of accountability instead of a "lecture on fate."

"When a plane crashes and people die, the least a Home Minister can offer is a promise of accountability, not a shrug and a lecture on fate," he said.

"‘Nobody can stop accidents’ is an abdication. If nothing can be prevented, why do we have ministries at all?" he questioned.

The Congress leader further said that aviation accidents are preventable and "not acts of God".

"That’s why we have aviation regulators, safety protocols, and crisis response systems."

"By the Home Minister’s logic, should we stop investing in safety infrastructure, regulation, or crisis preparedness altogether?
Just leave it to fate and call it a day?" he questioned further.

Among the deceased are six MBBS students, one junior doctor and a woman as the plane crashed into a medical college just outside the perimeter of the airport.
