Mobile phone, drugs seized in Kapurthala Modern Jail raid

A surprise search operation conducted by the CRPF in the Kapurthala Modern Jail has led to the recovery of prohibited items, including a mobile phone and narcotic substances.

The search was carried out under the supervision of Assistant Jail Superintendent Baldev Singh, targeting the barracks of inmates and undertrials. Officials discovered an unclaimed mobile phone and 36 gram of a narcotic substance concealed in the bathroom of Ward No.3, Room No. 3.

The jail authorities promptly confiscated the items and informed senior prison officials as well as the Kotwali police station. Based on a complaint filed by the prison administration, the Kotwali police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and the Prisons Act.

Police officials have initiated an investigation to identify the individual(s) responsible for smuggling and concealing the contraband. The authorities suspect the involvement of insiders or inmates with access to external contacts.

This incident raises the renewed concerns about the security lapses within high-security jails and the persistent challenges in curbing the smuggling of mobile phones and drugs on the prison premises. The prison department has reiterated its commitment to zero tolerance against such breaches and hinted at further tightening of internal surveillance and regular search drills.

The case remains under investigation. More details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
