New Delhi: In an unexpected incident, two Democrat US lawmakers, Senator John Hoffman and Representative Melissa Hortman were shot along with their spouses in overnight shootings on Saturday, 14 June 2025 in Champlin and Brooklyn. The assailant impersonated a police officer, say several reports.

Rep. Hortman and her husband were confirmed dead in the shooting.

According to Fox News, citing sources, the suspect was someone impersonating a police officer. Hortman, a Democrat from Brooklyn Park, represents District 34B. Hoffman, a Democrat from Champlin, represents Senate District 34. The extent of the injuries was not immediately known, and authorities have yet to confirm that the lawmakers were the victims of the attack.

Hortman and her husband were shot and killed in a “politically motivated assassination”, while Hoffman and his wife were shot multiple times but are expected to survive, said Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.

“She (Hortman) woke up every day determined to make this state a better place,” said Walz

US President Donald Trump, reacting to the incident, said that such horrific violence will not be tolerated in the United States. “I have been briefed on the terrible shooting that took place in Minnesota, which appears to be a targeted attack against State Lawmakers. Our Attorney General, Pam Bondi, and the FBI, are investigating the situation, and they will be prosecuting anyone involved to the fullest extent of the law,” he said.
