Extreme heat & power cuts cripple life in Sirsa
People in Sirsa are suffering due to intense heat and frequent power cuts. Electricity goes off seven-eight times a day, making life difficult. Due to low voltage and power tripping, home appliances are also at risk. Locals say these sudden power cuts are disturbing their daily lives and even ruining their sleep.
Sirsa has been the hottest place in Haryana since last week. On Saturday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 45.2°C, the highest in the state. Earlier in the week, temperatures reached as high as 47.4°C. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reports that Sirsa recorded top temperatures of over 44°C every day from June 7 to June 12.
Due to the extreme heat, the district administration has taken strict measures to prevent outbreak of diseases like jaundice and cholera. Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sharma has banned the sale of cut fruits, spoiled vegetables, uncertified mineral water, ice creams and other open or uncovered food items. Sale of food or drinks made with unsafe water is also not allowed.
Only approved mineral water and ice products, certified by government labs, can be sold. Health officials and food inspectors have been given authority to check and destroy unsafe food. They are also allowed to inspect any place in the district if jaundice cases are reported. Washing clothes or bathing animals near water sources is also banned.
Travel for patients with vomiting or diarrhoea symptoms is not allowed on public transport. Organising fairs or public gatherings without permission is banned too. These orders will remain in force till December 31, 2025. DC Sharma also advised people to protect themselves from heatstroke.
He suggested wearing light cotton clothes, staying indoors during peak heat hours (12 pm to 3 pm), drinking enough water and avoiding tea, coffee and alcohol. People should eat fresh food and avoid stale or high-protein items, he said.
He said, “Workers and pregnant women should take extra care. Everyone should use fans, keep their homes cool and take cold showers. Cooking areas should be well ventilated. Do not leave children or pets alone in vehicles. Ensure animals have shade and water.”
