Gurugram sees spike in drunk driving cases, over 3,000 challans in May

Cases of drunken driving continue to surface in Gurugram, with an increasing number of women also being caught driving under the influence. The Gurugram Traffic Police issued over 3,000 challans for drunken driving during the month of May alone, including to 28 female drivers.

Despite stringent rules and an ongoing special drive against drunken driving in Gurugram, offenders show little concern. On average, more than 10 drivers are caught daily by traffic police for driving after

consuming alcohol.

In Gurugram, a first-time offender caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can face a fine of Rs 10,000 or imprisonment for up to six months, or both, under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. For a second or subsequent offence within a year, the fine may increase to Rs 15,000 and imprisonment can extend to two years. The Gurugram Traffic Police also stated that the driving licence of the offender can be suspended for three months.

The police conducted a special campaign in May and challaned drivers found to be under the influence. A total of 3,058 challans were issued during this period, including to 28 women drivers.

A spokesperson for the Gurugram police said that during the same period, three vehicles were also impounded. “The licence of drivers who drink and drive is also suspended for three months, during which the driver cannot operate any vehicle,” the spokesperson added.

A senior traffic police officer noted that the number of women driving under the influence of alcohol is on the rise. In several instances, car drivers were found incapable of continuing to drive and police had to escort them home in official vehicles.

“The aim of the special campaigns run by Gurugram Traffic Police is to crack down on drunken driving and ensure compliance with traffic rules. Such challan campaigns will continue in the future as well by Gurugram Traffic Police,” said Dr Rajesh Mohan, DCP Traffic.
