‘Not on the right side but …’: Pat Cummins unfiltered remark on WTC Format after losing final against South Africa

New Delhi: Australia suffered a rare defeat in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 final. In this match played at Lord’s, South Africa performed brilliantly and defeated Australia by 5 wickets and won the WTC title for the first time. This was also their first ICC men’s trophy in 27 years. A team like Australia, which is not used to losing in ICC finals, kept seeing itself missing this time.

Lead in the first innings, slipped in the second

Australia started the match strongly and took a crucial lead of 67 runs in the first innings. But the batting collapsed in the second innings and from there South Africa made a way back. Thanks to Aiden Markram’s tremendous century and Kagiso Rabada‘s 9 wickets, the Proteas won the match. Captain Pat Cummins admitted that his team’s batting in the third innings was weak, which became a major reason for the defeat.

Cummins admitted: South Africa deserved to win

After the match, Cummins said that South Africa maintained themselves throughout the match and took advantage of every opportunity. He praised Markram and captain Temba Bavuma, especially Bavuma who stood firm despite a hamstring injury. Cummins said, “This is the pinnacle of Test cricket. Everything is decided in one match, even though we lost, it was a great week.”

Dominant WTC cycle, but missed the final

Australia performed brilliantly in the last WTC cycle – won the title by defeating India in 2023, retained the Ashes and won on overseas tours. But this time this performance could not be repeated at Lord’s. Cummins admitted that even though the result was not in his favor, he is proud of the last two years of cricket.
