Why Does Lord Vishnu Sleep For Four Months In Chaturmas?
According to Hindu mythology, King Bali, a mighty and generous demon king, had conquered all three realms, Earth, Heaven, and Patal Lok. Alarmed by his growing power, Lord Indra and other deities approached Lord Vishnu for help. To restore cosmic balance, Lord Vishnu incarnated as Vamana, a dwarf Brahmin.
He approached King Bali and asked for three steps of land as alms. The king agreed, unaware of the divine plan. Vamana then took a colossal form, measuring the Earth with one step and the Heavens with the second. With no space left for the third step, King Bali offered his head, which Vamana accepted, pushing him to Patal Lok.
Pleased with Bali’s devotion and generosity, Lord Vishnu granted him a boon. Bali wished for the Lord to stay with him in the Netherworld. Honouring his devotee’s request, Lord Vishnu agreed to stay in Patal Lok from Ashadh Shukla Ekadashi to Kartik Shukla Ekadashi every year.
This decision left the deities and Goddess Lakshmi concerned. To bring Lord Vishnu back, Goddess Lakshmi disguised herself as a woman and tied a rakhi on King Bali, calling him her brother. In return, she requested Lord Vishnu’s release, to which Bali agreed, but only on the condition that the Lord would return to him every year for four months.
Thus, during Chaturmas, Lord Vishnu remains in yogic slumber in Patal Lok, and this period holds immense spiritual significance in Hindu tradition.
