Chandigarh gets relief from heatwave as temperatures dip
Chandigarh experienced relief from the intense heatwave conditions that it faced for the past week, with both day and night temperatures dipping on Monday. The maximum temperature decreased by 0.3 degrees during the past 24 hours, while the minimum temperature dropped significantly by four degrees after reaching 32.7 degrees Celsius on Saturday night.
The overcast sky, moderate winds, and traces of rain provided some respite from the scorching sun. According to the weather forecast, the Tricity region, comprising Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula, can expect partly cloudy skies with possible thunderstorms and light rain for the next five days until June 21.
However, a yellow alert has been issued for thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds at 40-50 kmph speed at isolated places in Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana until June 22, with a forecast of heavy rainfall at isolated places on Sunday. Despite this, the maximum temperature is expected to gradually fall by 3 to 5 degrees over the next three days.
After experiencing the season’s warmest night on Saturday with a minimum temperature of 32.7 degrees Celsius, Chandigarh residents felt relief on Sunday night as the temperature dropped to 27.7 degrees Celsius. Ludhiana in Punjab and Sirsa in Haryana recorded the highest minimum temperatures of 32 and 30.6 degrees Celsius, respectively, on Sunday night.
The residents of the Tricity region experienced some respite from the intense heatwave conditions on Monday, with the maximum day temperature further decreasing compared to Sunday. This marked the second consecutive day of relief from the severe heatwave conditions that lasted for seven days from June 8 to June 14.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted further relief from the hot weather conditions during this week. According to Meteorological Centre Chandigarh, the department’s observatory at Sector 39 recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius, while another observatory at the Indian Air Force (IAF) airport logged 37.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday.
Sirsa became the hottest place in the region on Monday with a maximum temperature of 38.4 degrees Celsius, while Amritsar and Gurdaspur measured a maximum of 37.5 degrees Celsius. Rewari in Haryana and Pathankot in Punjab experienced the coolest nights in the region on Sunday with minimum temperatures of 24.2 and 24.7 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The MeT department has predicted a gradual decrease in the maximum temperature for the next five days in the Tricity region. The temperatures in Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula are expected to remain between 33 and 36 degrees Celsius (maximum) and 26 and 27 degrees Celsius (minimum), with a possibility of light rain and thunderstorms until June 21.
On Monday, Panchkula remained the coolest place in the Tricity region with the lowest maximum temperature, while Chandigarh was the hottest, followed by Mohali.
