Political career, social presence to decide dist Cong chiefs

Hectic political activity is on in Rohtak as the exercise for the selection of district urban and rural presidents of the party is going on in full swing.

The will of two-time Haryana Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda is likely to prevail in the selection of the party’s district presidents as Rohtak is Hooda’s hometown and his Assembly constituency is also located in the district.

Nonetheless, Congress leaders maintain that the candidates’ political career, loyalty towards the party, social presence and activities, caste factor and ability to manage the organisational affairs would be the major criteria in the selection process.

One observer from AICC and three from HPCC have been deployed to evaluate the applications of the aspirants on the basis of the aforesaid criteria.

“A panel of six names for the post of each district president will be prepared after scrutinising the applications. Then, the observers appointed by the party will finalise three names for each post after consultation with Congress general secretary and in-charge of party affairs in Haryana BK Hariprasad. The final decision will be taken by the party’s central leadership," said Congress MLA from Rohtak Bharat Bhushan Batra.

Local Congress leader and four-time municipal councillor Gulshan Ishpuniyani, Congress mayoral candidate Surajmal Kiloi, local trader leaders Hemant Bakshi, Rakesh Garg and Vijay Goel and party delegate Balraj Balle appear to be the frontrunners for the post of District Congress (Urban) president.
