Chaudhary Prakash’s legacy will inspire generations to come: Speaker
The Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday paid rich tributes to Chaudhary Brahm Prakash, the first Chief Minister of Delhi, on his 107th birth anniversary.
The commemoration, held on the Assembly premises, was led by Speaker Vijender Gupta, who described Prakash as a “visionary leader whose enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations.”
The ceremony was attended by Deputy Speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, PWD and Legislative Affairs Minister Parvesh Verma, Social Welfare Minister Indraj Singh, Deputy Mayor Jai Bhagwan Yadav and Chief Whip Abhay Verma. As part of the tribute, a special photo exhibition showcasing rare and historic moments from the life of Brahm Prakash was also inaugurated.
In his address, the Speaker recalled that Prakash became Delhi’s first Chief Minister in 1952 at the age of just 32, and later served as a Member of Parliament four times. He lamented the lack of formal recognition accorded to the late leader in recent decades, despite his significant contributions to Delhi’s political and social development.
Gupta also remembered the unveiling of Prakash’s statue on the Assembly premises in 1979. It was installed by late Shri Sahib Singh Verma in the presence of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He noted that Verma, too, drew inspiration from Prakash’s ideals and leadership.
Bisht described Prakash as a “revered statesman” whose ideals remain relevant today. “It is our duty to preserve the legacies of such living legends,” he said.
Verma shared personal memories of Prakash, noting that he represented Sadar and Outer Delhi in Parliament before joining forces with Chaudhary Charan Singh. He added that his father had got Prakash’s portrait installed on the Assembly premises as a mark of respect.
The Social Welfare Minister praised the former CM’s lifelong dedication to the uplift of the marginalised and his deep commitment to social justice. Chief Whip Abhay Verma underscored the need to preserve the memory of leaders who helped shape Delhi’s democratic foundations.
