A Mumbai-bound Air India flight from San Francisco deplaned passengers in Kolkata after a technical snag was noticed in one of the engines of the aircraft during the early hours of Tuesday. All passengers onboard were deboarded during a scheduled halt at Kolkata airport.

According to airline authorities, flight AI180 of Air India arrived on time, at 00.45 hrs, at the Kolkata airport but a technical snag in the left engine resulted in the take-off getting delayed. "At about 05.20 hrs, an announcement was made in the aircraft asking all the passengers to deplane," authorities said. The decision was made in the interest of flight safety, the captain of the plane told the passengers.

The development comes following the tragic crash involving an Air India flight in Ahmedabad last week. Air India's AI171 Ahmedabad-London flight crashed on June 12 near the Ahmedabad Airport. The aircraft crashed over BJ Medical College's hostel near the airport. Except one passenger who was seated next to the emergency door, all 241 passengers onboard the plane died in the tragic crash. In the crash, five persons died at the college accommodation as well. Former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani was one of the victims of the crash and his mortal remains were cremated with full state honours at Rajkot on Monday.

The Union government has ordered a probe and has also appointed an expert panel to study the incident and suggest measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Experts from the US and the UK are also assisting in the investigation.
