IDF assassinates Ali Khamenei's close aide Ali Shadmani, Iran's wartime chief of staff

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) has confirmed that they have targeted and killed Major General Ali Shadmani, Iran’s wartime chief of staff and the Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya. Shadmani was appointed by the Iranian Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, as a replacement for Maj Gen Gholamali Rashid, who was killed last Friday in Israel’s recent strikes against Iran.

The IDF said that Shadmani was one of the closest remaining military figures and advisors to Khamenei. In a post on X, they said that he was killed “in an IAF strike in central Tehran, following precise intelligence.”

On June 13, Khamenei posted on X announcing the appointment of Ali Shadmani saying, “In view of Lt Gen Gholamali Rashid’s martyrdom at the hands of the vile Zionist regime, and in light of Major General Ali Shadmani's meritorious services & valuable experience, I confer the rank of Major Gen & appoint him Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya (pbuh) Central HQ.” Iranian media is yet to confirm the death.

Shadmani previously held the post of deputy chief of the Khatam al-Anbiya, central headquarters of the Iranian Armed Forces. The Khatam al-Anbiya is responsible for managing combat operations and approving Iran’s attack plans.

The report comes right after the G7 nations leaders called for an immediate de-escalation of the conflict and also reaffirming Israel's right to defend itself. They also said that Iran was a source of instability and that the country must never acquire a nuclear weapon. Trump had left the summit early and later said that “Everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!”

The conflict began on Friday, after Israel launched a pre-emptive strike against Iran claiming that they were on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons. Israel has been targeting Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites and their ballistic missile programme. Several top Iranian leaders part of Khamenei’s inner circles were killed in precision strikes.

Early Tuesday, people were seen evacuating Tehran while the Iranian government has been trying to keep it under control.  At least 224 people in Iran and 24 in Israel have been killed since the conflict began.
