Kerala Braces For Heavy Rains Till June 18; IMD Issues Orange & Yellow Alerts Across Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of weather alerts across Kerala, forecasting widespread heavy to very heavy rainfall until June 18, as multiple weather systems continue to intensify over the region. Authorities have responded by issuing red, orange, and yellow alerts for several districts and warning residents in vulnerable areas to remain on high alert.
Kerala IMD Weather Warnings
June 17: Orange Alert (Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall - 7 to 20 cm): Kannur, Kasaragod
June 18: Yellow Alert (Heavy Rainfall - 7 to 11 cm): Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod
According to IMD, "Light to moderate rainfall at most/many places with Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall (7-20 cm) very likely at isolated places over Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Kerala & Mahe, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, and Ghat areas of Tamil Nadu."
Rain or thundershowers expected at many places in Kerala and Lakshadweep. Squally winds and rough seas forecast along the Kerala coast.
Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions caused by an active cyclonic circulation over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions. A low-pressure area is likely to form within the next 24 hours, which may further intensify and move north-northwestward.
Local administrations have been placed on high alert. Residents in hilly regions and low-lying flood-prone zones have been urged to exercise caution and follow evacuation instructions if issued.
Authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather systems closely and are preparing for emergency response operations should conditions worsen.
