Kinnaur ramps up monsoon preparedness

To ensure preparedness for the upcoming monsoon season, the Deputy Commissioner of Kinnaur, Amit Kumar Sharma, today directed the officials of all the concerned departments to complete necessary tasks within their respective departments on time to ensure smooth management in case of any disaster.

While chairing a meeting to review monsoon preparedness, the DC instructed officials from the Public Works Department, National Highways, General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) and hydro projects to keep sufficient machinery available in landslide and flood-prone areas to repair roads. He said special attention should be given to villages affected by last year’s monsoon to minimise damage in case of future calamities.

He also directed officials of the Jal Shakti Department and state Electricity Board to complete necessary work to address potential issues related to water supply and electricity during the monsoon. The Jal Shakti Department was also instructed to ensure regular cleaning of water storage tanks and drainage systems to prevent the outbreak of waterborne diseases. The Food and Civil Supplies Department was directed to ensure adequate stock of ration, oil and gas in remote and vulnerable areas of the district in advance of the monsoon.

Dr Sharma also instructed the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) to stay fully prepared for any emergency. He emphasised timely dissemination of weather updates to the public and directed the activation of the early warning system.

Following this, the Deputy Commissioner also chaired a meeting to review the preparations for the 11th International Yoga Day, scheduled to be held on June 21, at the ITBP ground in Reckong Peo. He said that this year’s theme is ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’ and for the first time, International Yoga Day celebrations will also be held at Shipki La, located on the India-China border.
