Delhi University begins admission process; new courses, quotas introduced

The University of Delhi officially launched its admission process for the academic year 2025-26, with Vice-Chancellor Prof Yogesh Singh unveiling the Common Seat Allocation System (CSAS) portal at a press conference on Tuesday.

The portal covers admissions to undergraduate, postgraduate, five-year integrated law, BTech, PhD and School of Open Learning (SOL) programmes. Alongside the portal, the university also released the ‘Bulletin of Information’ to guide students through the process.

Prof Singh announced the launch of two new postgraduate programmes — MA in Hindi Journalism and MA in Tourism Management — while also confirming that MA in Journalism will soon be introduced in the Department of English. In a move aimed at encouraging female education, DU has introduced a ‘Single Girl Child’ quota in each PG programme, with one seat reserved per course. He also highlighted technical upgrades to the CSAS portal, such as an auto-accept feature to prevent students from missing out on seat allotments.

The Vice-Chancellor said the Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) admissions would begin soon and would be based on Class 12 merit scores. He also emphasised that the CUET-based admission model has broadened DU’s reach, attracting students from diverse states and small towns.

The academic session is scheduled to begin from August 1.

Providing details about postgraduate admissions, Prof Singh shared that DU received 53,609 registrations across 82 PG programmes, with 13,432 seats available (including NCWEB). Of the total applications, 30,490 came from girls, 23,117 from boys and two from transgender candidates. The most sought-after programmes were LLB (9,270 registrations) and MA Political Science (4,996). Notably, 1,131 candidates applied under the ‘Single Girl Child’ quota and 90 under the orphan quota.

Dean, Admissions, Prof Haneet Gandhi said DU would offer admission to 79 undergraduate programmes across 69 colleges, with 71,624 UG seats available this year. A total of 186 combinations were being offered in BA programmes. She added that the university has revised its eligibility criteria in light of NTA’s updated subject list, and many courses now have dual eligibility options for better student flexibility.

For BTech programmes in computer science engineering, electronics and communication engineering and electrical engineering, DU received 6,030 applications. Of these, 4,349 were from boys and 1,681 from girls. Under the Single Girl Child quota, 195 girls applied, while four applications were received under the orphan quota. Admission to these courses will be based on JEE (Main) Paper-I scores.

Director, School of Open Learning (SOL) Prof Payal Mago stated that PG admissions in SOL would be CUET-based. However, certain programmes — including MBA, BLISc, MLISc and PGDADLM — will admit students without CUET. From this year, SOL will also offer sports quota admissions at both UG and PG levels. Medal-winning athletes at national or international levels will be eligible for fee waivers and support. SOL has also introduced Financial Support Schemes (FSS) for various categories, including PwBD, orphans, wards of armed forces personnel, transgender students, university employees and their wards, meritorious female students, EWS and athletes.

To support applicants, the university has set up nine telephone helplines, email support and a chatbot for resolving admission-related queries. SOL has also opened two admission help centres, which will function from June 22 to assist students with the application process.
